Hello fellow readers, welcome to the blog! Today I'd like to talk about passivity, particularly in men. I, like many of you have had periods of my life where I felt I was coasting aimlessly through life without any goals or ambitions. (A word that oftentimes I disliked, due to my preconceived idea that to be ambitious meant that I had to turn into a selfish jerk that mistreats and uses people - perhaps a theme for a future blog! Now back on track.) Passivity in men is a multifaceted concept that encompasses a range of behaviors characterized by a lack of assertiveness, initiative, low risk tolerance or emotional engagement. This tendency can manifest in various ways, from avoiding decision-making and any type of conflict to disengaging from relationships, leading to difficulties in expressing needs and desires, resulting in a passive demeanor in both personal and professional contexts.
The modern labelling of "toxic masculinity" (whatever that term means) and other modern societal expectations contribute significantly to the prevalence of passive behaviors in men. As a result, men may feel pressured to adopt a passive role in their relationships, fearing judgment or rejection should they exhibit dominance, assertiveness or "negative" emotions. For instance, consider a workplace setting where a male employee may refrain from voicing his opinions during meetings, opting instead to defer to others. This passivity not only hinders his professional growth but also diminishes team dynamics by undermining collaboration.
Furthermore, the implications of passivity can extend to personal relationships. In many cases, passive men may struggle to establish boundaries, leading to imbalances where their needs remain unmet. This imbalance often fosters resentment and frustration that can jeopardize the foundation of relationships. An example may include a man who consistently prioritizes his partner's needs at the expense of his own, ultimately resulting in emotional withdrawal and dissatisfaction. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for recognizing the broader impact of passivity on men's lives and for addressing the necessary steps toward overcoming this challenging behavior. The fact that you will not endear yourself or be appreciated by most people in our society if you exhibit masculine qualities, such as leadership and assertiveness even in a positive context, certainly doesn't help.
Simply put, passivity is a tendency to accept circumstances as they are without taking action. Passive men might avoid making decisions, let others control the direction of their lives, or they may simply "go with the flow", even when the current isn't taking them anywhere good. Passivity isn’t the same as being laid-back or easygoing—it’s more about feeling unable or unwilling to assert yourself, even when it’s in your best interest to do so. One of the mental roadblocks that many men must face and cross is the misconception that being a good man means everyone will like you, or that being good means never making someone feel bad. Definitions are very important and the concepts you have in your mind shape who you are. I heard someone say once that the difference between a boy and a man is that a man prioritizes being respected to being liked. If the general mindset behind your passiveness is the desire to be liked by everyone you meet, then my friend, it's time to grow!
Consequences of Passivity

Take More (calculated) Risks

When you take risks, you step outside your comfort zone, challenging the mindset that keeps you playing it safe and avoiding action. Passivity often thrives in the space where fear of failure or rejection dominates, but taking risks disrupts that cycle. It forces you to confront those fears head-on, showing you that failure isn’t the end—it’s often the beginning of growth.
Risk-taking leads to success because it creates opportunities for learning and development. Even if the outcome isn’t what you hoped for, the process of trying teaches you resilience, problem-solving, and adaptability. Purpose is The key
Having a purpose or goal in life is one of the most powerful ways for men to overcome passivity. Purpose gives direction and motivation, making it easier to break away from a passive routine that can lead to feeling stuck or uninspired.
